Alberto Martini: 1931-1965

In the roaring Fifties, in full economic miracle, Alberto Martini, having just graduated in Florence with Roberto Longhi, was moving towards the art of an art historian. A discipline that in a few years the young man would have revolutionized, entering the homes of Italians thanks to the mythical “Masters of Color” Fabbri Editori. Project that allowed him to travel the world and to accumulate a series of contacts with museum directors and officials, in an international range: amazing journeys to direct the photographic campaigns, finally in color, of the works to be reproduced in the successful series . Alongside the great informative building site, he had flanked relevant scientific studies, from surveys on the fourteenth century in Rimini to the clarification of the stages in the youth career of Bartolomeo della Gatta. From 1962 Martini would have established a deep bond with Alberto Giacometti, on which he would soon focus on the most acute and lucid analysis expressed up to that point by Italian critics. The volume offers an intellectual biography of the character, with unpublished documents and correspondence, retracing the steps of his career, punctuated by the multifaceted experiences that a young enterprising art historian could accumulate in the prolific Italy of the economic boom years, including radio and television.
