British Deaf News
About the Deaf community. With the Deaf community. For the Deaf community. In 1886, the National Association for the Deaf and Dumb (NADD) was started by Deaf people in the United Kingdom to counter what they saw as a threat to Deaf people’s language and their right to education using what communication was chosen. The immediate cause of the BDA’s birth was the failure of an 1889 Royal Commission on the education of deaf children to consult Deaf people. This led the magazine Deaf Mute to urge Deaf people to unite in defence of their own interests.
