Hans van Maanen sketches a history of the theater world, not of the theater. The production of theater plays a very important role in that world, of course, but the main focus is on the change in the distribution of theater over the years. The role of the government – which continuously tries to follow developments or keep them manageable – is also discussed. The author deals with the history of the theater system in an analytical manner and also pays attention to the main bottlenecks of the contemporary system: the quality problem, the participation issue and the issue of identification.
