Nature, Science and Modern Life by Dr. Y.S. Rajan
Most of us today in 21st Century love to go back to nature. This desire is built into our genes through evolution and wired into our brains. We no doubt are tied to our modern gadgets. But we love green plants, leaves, lawns, and colours of flowers. We are thrilled by the roaring oceans in the sea-coast. We love gushing waters. We love our pets. Of course we love to see the mountains and are awe-inspired by their immensity. Very rarely we get a chance to see the star-studded sky and are thrilled. We fall in love with full moon are afraid of total darkness!
This love for nature is irrespective of the fact that we occasionally come across the terrible face of Nature : floods, earthquakes, landslides etc. After sometime we forget it.
We tend to forget that human population has grown several hundred fold since those ‘good old days’!! In fact post independence, that is from mid 1940’s, developing countries including India have increased their populations five times; five hundred percent!
So the solutions for the modern human beings are very different from the ‘good old days’! They require a good understanding of Science, Engineering, Biology, Neurosciences, Economics, etc.
Yes, we have to live with nature, but in modern world which will keep changing!

End of Indenture An Agonising Journey to Freedom by Dr. Ruchi Verma, Narayan Kumar And Amb. Anup Mudgal
Growing public outrage finally forced the abolition of the curse of slavery starting with the year 1833. An immensely welcome step soon brought to the fore another major challenge of severe labour shortages in the plantation colonies. The colonial rulers devised another deceptive tool of engaging large scale cheap labour for their plantations under the so-called ‘Indenture system’.
The British carried out the largest such operation and mobilised close to 2 million workers from India and carried them to far off lands in the Caribbean, Africa and the Pacific. On the face of it, these workers were taken under a mutually agreed contract, called the ‘agreement’ which also led to the popular folklore of ‘girmit’. However, in terms of protection of the workers’ basic rights, this system was really no different from the erstwhile slavery. Generations of these workers struggled in agony for achieving the eventual liberation from this de-facto bondage. The plight of the indentured workers also deeply moved the Indian leadership especially Mahatma Gandhi who personally witnessed their sufferings in South Africa and Mauritius.
Rising and loud criticism started demanding the abolition of indentureship in the plantation colonies, India and elsewhere. There was another unexpected pressure for able-bodied men for the First World War operations in Europe. These factors together forced the colonial powers to finally abolish the indenture system in the year 1917. Hence, the year 2017 marked the centenary of this landmark development widely celebrated along the entire ‘indentured route’ namely Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Suriname. As in most of these countries, the majority of the populations are of Indian origin, this was also a cause for celebration in India.
The Antar Rashtriya Sahayog Parishad with its 40 years of outreach with the Indian diaspora, especially the Girmitiya countries organised a special commemorative International conference on 20-22 April 2017 in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). In addition to being addressed by Indian leadership, the conference was attended by over 100 experts from India and abroad.
This book is a compilation of the proceedings, presentations and the outcomes of this important event. We hope that this publication would be useful to academics and scholars dealing with diaspora and history of the indentured system.
Cricket in Indian Mythology by Ravi Chaturvedi
Since the author has been actively involved in cricket as a commentator for nearly half-a-century, he got an opportunity to explore avenues beyond the accepted norms. When Dr. Heiner Gillmeister, a Professor at the University of Bonn in Germany came up with a theory that cricket is a game of Flemish origin played in the County of Philanders, it took the author to his childhood game of Gulli Danda. It aroused in him an insatiable hunger to delve deep and find out other indigenous games akin to the primitive game of cricket played by the Philanders. Going through the life of Lord Krishna, the author came to know of a game Kanduka Krida played in Vrindavan by the shepherds with Krishna. A thorough research, substantiated by relevant quotes from the scriptures, helped the author establish the similarity between Kanduka Krida and archaic cricket.
The analogy in the book that Sanjaya of Mahabharata was the first commentator of the world at Kurukshetra, describing the events with the help of his celestial vision which the author equates with the lens of the television camera. Indian mythology again finds place in cricket where the author finds a distinct functional similarity between the Third Eye of Lord Shiva and the Third Umpire of cricket. It is a unique book which acknowledges that Indian scriptures are a storehouse of vast unexplored knowledge.
Pebbles on the Sea-Shore by S.K. Narang
Emotions form an integral part of human heart and become genesis of great pieces of literature. Present book has developed into socially purposeful stories out of such thoughts.
Tragedy of India’s partition is a hair-raising story but is softened by the balm of love. Pure love sometimes results in pain of separation and is a heart wrenching tragedy of a love story. Children, a source of great strength for their parents, sometimes become cause of grave pain on account of their insatiable ambitions.
Story of a simple housing problem brings out scores of problems of our sick and ailing social and democratic systems. Caste still continues to be a bane in our marriage system. This social evil has been woven into the problems of our judicial system.
How a poor innocent girl brings joy and happiness to an old pilgrim who is handicapped by the language problem is a subject matter of an interesting story. Pure love and desire to raise a happy family lands a poor fisherwoman in jail.
Humour, a part of our life, has been built as an integral part of some stories to lighten the impact of seriousness yet retaining the purpose and essence of narration. In short, real and imaginary ideas form the core of the stories that leave food for thought for the reader to ponder over long afterwards.
Sankara—No-Other (A Tribute to Adi Shankaracharya) by Raghunandan Trikannad
Sankara Bhagavadpada was instrumental in reviving our culture more than 1200 years back. Unfortunately, sankaracarya has become synonymous with terse, logical and complex philosophy of Advaita; or with Brahmanism a word coined by western philosophers, and a notion that he is relevant only to a particular caste; or with the ascetic way of life that promotes escapism. This book tries to present ¸ Acaryasankara as a prodigy discovering his mission; as a person who learnt from many persons and situations, after coming in direct contact with the masses and classes of the society; as a prophet who had the foresight to select the eligible persons for his mission; as a forerunner who included all persons at every stage of growth in his teachings; as a synthesiser of hand, heart and head, and most of all, as an inspiration for scaling that peak which lies within each one of us.

Middle-Aged Teenagers by C. Rajshekhar Rao
The ‘Middle-Aged Teenagers’ is a short novel with a strong story line and clearly etched out characters which Indian readers will relate to.
It is the story of a group of friends who, now in their 40s, embark on a stag weekend to Goa, hoping to relive earlier times. Happily married but looking for excitement elsewhere, the five get out of the mundane to be their natural selves.
The story brings out the contrast between this trip and one taken 23 years ago when they were just out of school, cash-strapped and immature. But what the two trips have in common is their propensity to run into trouble.
If they had steered clear of misery as teenagers, they find themselves in a bigger pit on this trip. In a hilarious climax that has them at the mercy of underworld goons at a sleazy joint, they end up fulfilling their long forgotten desires that laid buried under the pressure of home and hearth.
The story has a subtle but strong message for the readers— that they can pursue their desires, which are often not very difficult to achieve.
The Life and Times of Chandrashekhar Azad by Bharat Bhushan
Chandrashekhar Azad’s short and chequered life of a revolutionary is remembered in the annals of the history of India’s freedom struggle not merely for his indomitability in the face of odds, but for the human values he cherished. In today’s world, with the edifice of every conceivable value crumbling all around us, Azad’s life offers a paradigm for the redemption of a generation resigned to shallow ideals. Adversity came a dime a dozen to this village youth born to poor parents rich in morality and humaneness. It’s the roots that determine the actions of a person and actions, his destiny.
At a time when we seem to be taking our freedom for granted, Azad’s biography is a reminder of the blood and toil that went into securing it. The road to preservation of freedom must be hemmed with respect for what we have, for being fortunate to be able to breathe in free air. The crucial caveat embedded in Azad’s biography is that we face a far greater threat from the enemies within than from enemies without.
Oh Krishna, Come Again! by Dinkar Joshi
Arriving running, he extended his hand to pull out the arrow from the leg.
Krishna raised his hand in objection…
Jaraa said, “Why? O Lord, Why?”
“Let it be brother..! Do not attempt to make Mother Gaandhaari’s words go in vain..!” Krishna replied in a very steady tone.
“I have committed a great sin. Please forgive me, O Lord..! Thinking that you were a jungle animal….I…. shot at arrow at you. Jaraa started moaning in a piteous voice.
“Get up, son..!” Krishna said. “What is your name?”
“My…my..name is Jaraa..!”
“Jaraa..! OK..!” Your name is also significant, son..! Jaraa means old age, never ever leaves anyone..! You are merely an instrument, son..!”
There is no such Indian language in which, poetry, story, novel, drama, reference-book and such other history has not been created—keeping Krishna as the centre-point. The novel “Shyam fir ek baar tum mil jaate” (original Gujarati) is an Upanishadic novel.
During the prevailing Aryavart, Krishna was an imposing-personage. When this personage dissolved in the deadly silence that had overcast, this is a written display of the shriek of ‘that-silence’. When Krishna was in front it was a different matter. This novel takes the confused state of mind of the characters—beginning with Vasudev Devaki, Akroor, Uddhav, and Radha— upto an unprecedented height, when Krishna dissolved.
Light Come, Light Go by Ralph Nevill
Excerpt from Light Come, Light Go:
The passion for speculation which, throughout all ages, has captivated the great bulk of humanity, would seem to be an innate characteristic of mankind. It assumes various forms and guises which often deceive those over whom it exercises its sway, and becomes in numberless cases a veritable obsession, causing its victims to devote the whole of their time, thoughts, and money—sometimes even their lives—to its service. Devotees of the simpler forms of gambling, such as are to be procured at the card-table and on the race-course, are often looked down upon by people who are themselves under the sway of other insidious, if more reputable, modes of tempting fortune. For all speculation, whether it be in pigs or wheat, stocks and shares, race-horses or cards, is in essence the same—its main feature being merely the desire to obtain “something for nothing,” or in other words to acquire wealth without work. Gambling, of no matter what kind, is thus a conscious and deliberate departure from the general aim of civilised society, which is to obtain proper value for its money. The gambler, on the other hand, receives either a great deal more than he gives or nothing at all.
